So over the weekend I had a good lil interview with the homie Polyester...rather than setting this interview up, who he is, what he does...let's just get to it shall we:
Area of LA born & raised: South Central LA, spent lots of summers in the Bay though too
Top 5 Artists any genre: Stevie Wonder, Rick James, Andre 3000, Snoop & 2 Pac
Favorite food: Mexican (#LAShit)
How long have you been playing music: drums for 23 years, piano for 13 yrs
Favorite instrument: vibes
Favorite beat you've produced: "Homegirl"
Talk about the album: Peace Love Unity Respect, title came from a term in the Dance Club World, raves & festivals
Release date: 12.7.2010 (get it here)
Number of tracks: 10 tracks, wanted to drop on the bday 10.10.10, it was to let us know he was goin in cuz 2010 is going to be POPpin, so 10 tracks. Ended up dropping the single "Weekend Chicc" on that day. Polyester knew that 2010 was going to be POPpin, not just for LA Hip Hop but him as an artist. 10 was all part of the plan.
Album features: Marz Lovejoy, Casey Veggies, Like of Pac Div, Zipp & Dom Kennedy
On the LA Scene you're known mostly as 1/2 of LAUSD, what do you want the people to recognize about Poly as an artist: That I'm trying to come with a whole refreshing vibe that is different from anything out. It's time to move onto the next tier of music. Things are cool now but it's time to go up a level.
Favorite song: I have 2, "My Way" f/ Like, and "Brighter Day" f/ Zipp. Both songs mean a lot to me personally. After it was over it made more sense to me and I got it. Definitely had a message though I didn't intend to give a certain message.
How did the deal w/ iHipHop come about: They had thedeal with Lavish, and I had a track for him on his album. There were artists in LA that iHipHop was checking for and noticed that I made tracks for them. So when they were getting the song for Lavish they asked what I was working on. I told them my album, they asked to hear it, I played it they liked it and said let's put that out and here we are.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of being an independent artist: advantage - some doors open sooner because business is backing, no real disadvantage because as an artist I'm always going to do me and get it POPpin
With the digital era being as necessary as it is these days what are your personal views on digital music; free downloads, blogs, touring, major labels, onsmash being shut down etc: all part of the thing I felt happening years ago with the traditional music industry getting a wash. And this will open the doors for more raw talent and demanding crowds because they are being accepted off of their talent. As of right now there are no legends in the game (no disrespect to anyone doing it) and now the new wave coming in has many talented people who will become legend.
Upcoming collaborations: Casey Veggies, 2 tracks on Sleepin In Class, also mixed & mastered his project. Going more full fledged into production and as an artist I'm intensifying my production. Marz situation was just that. iHipHop asked who was next since I had seen who was about to POP in the city, I said Marz was next. They scooped her up and asked if I wanted to work with her. Ended up producing her project in 2 weeks and that project is POPpin (go get that "This Little Light of Mine").
Old west/New west comparison: Snoop & Dre are the two names I get a lot of the time. I think because I'm pretty laid back like Snoop, then the Dre thing is because I produce. (Eazee note: Curly Tops & Nautica Jackets was very much a Chronic for the LA Underground IMO)
Upcoming producers you look out for: The Weathermen and Ro Blvd (known him forever since he 1st got Pro Tools)
Who do you want to work with soon (LA "underground" and major label): Kendrick Lamar & Andre 3000
Fan questions: Jansport J wants to know why you haven't started Curly Tops 2 yet? It's not time, CT&NJ folks was done because people were making their way, the next one won't make sense until all those folks are really on, make it come full circle. People still have to grasp the first one.
If an out of towner could only ask you where to go in LA for a weekend, what are 3 places you'd tell them they have to go? Restaurants, club, lounge, bar, shopping, landmark, etc... Venice, Hollywood and hit up South Central LA. Most people don't go there because they're scared. Just go check it out and do you and no one will bother you. If you over there looking scary it might be a problem. It's things to see out there.
Any last words Poly? Go ahead and get this album, listen to the whole thing. It's a new vibe coming and it's not going to stop. I made the decision years ago that it was this or nothing.
Shouts the producers that helped Fresh Chuck of HellaGood (Polyester's production company), L4zy Lou of LAUSD and Trackademicks, my brodie from the Bay.
(And of course) SMILE EVERYDAY - P
Don't forget to grab Polyester's "Peace Love Unity Respect"
