A contest for songwriters to win $2500 in relation to this upcoming independent film.  More details below:

"GhettoPhysics" is the first film of its kind to breakdown the correlation between the Pimp-Ho dynamics of Prostitution with the Pimp-Ho realities of the American Capitalist system. The film stars the likes of Cornel West, Ice T, Too Short, Filmore Slim, John Perkins, Cynthia Mckinney, Norman Lear, E. Raymond Brown and many more.

To raise awareness of the film, a song writing contest will be held beginning August 2010 and ending September 1st, 2010.  Rules and regulations for the Song writing contest can be found on the contest site ghettophysicscontest.com.  The 1st place winner will receive $2500, as well as a spot on the films soundtrack (2nd and 3rd place winners will be awarded as well). We ask that you place the films trailer and link to the contest in a post on your respective sites.

Furthermore, On August the 24th there will be a private screening of the film at the Bridge Cinema in Culver City for press and invited guest.  We invite you and your staff to come join us as we partake in the learning process towards freedom.  More information on the screening will be sent to you shortly.

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws(NORML), a Washington DC-based marijuana advocacy group, has partnered with jam-based dub rock heavyweightsSlightly Stoopid and hip-hop juggernauts Cypress Hill on the Legalize It 2010tour for a YouTube based video contest to raise awareness for California's Prop 19, the initiative to regulate and tax marijuana. The initiative will be on the California ballot November 2nd, 2010 and its passage would be a historic step forward in the fight to end marijuana prohibition and legalize marijuana nationwide..

NORML, Slightly Stoopid, and Cypress Hill invite US residents to create 30-60 second videos of themselves answering the question, "What could California do with the revenue generated from taxing marijuana?" Participants are to upload their entries to YouTube with the tag "YesOnProp19." Members of both bands and representatives from NORML will personally pick one grand prize winner and two runner-ups from a selection of the most viewed, rated, and commented upon videos. Prizes include a personal phone call from B-Real, a limited edition Slightly Stoopid vaporizer, a framed autographed tour poster, a free one-year membership to NORML, plus more. Proposition 19, the Regulate, Control, and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010 (www.taxcannabis.org), will give local governments the ability to tax the sale of up to one ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes to adults age 21 and older. According to the Board of Equalization (BOE), California's tax regulator, controlling and taxing marijuana in California could generate $1.4 billion in much needed revenue each year. These funds could go towards jobs, public safety, healthcare, parks, transportation, education and more.

On that Community Tip...Voter Registration Fraud

While we're on the subject of young people making a difference in the community...I spotted 2 of colleagues of mine being interviewd on KTLA in regards to voter registration, the big campaign, and voter registration fraud? Crazy times...but check out my boys Mario Singleton & Ken Billups (who's event I missed yesterday and I didn't get a chance to post, forgive me Mr. Billups). I owe you a Local Spotlight sir. I've been busy but your hard work doesn't go unnoticed here.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT : SPECIAL EDITION - Kellie Hawkins

So every now and then I skim through the Wave newspaper, well i didn't last week and now I'm kicking myself in the a$$. My mom pointed out an article on the front page...lo & behold it's a good friend that I go back years with. She basically has become an executive director for the Los Angeles City Commission on the Status of Women. She is the youngest woman and the first African American to hold this position. Congrats Ms. Hawkins (can't call you Kellz anymore). Had to highlight this because we don't give enough acknowledgement to local movers and shakers that aren't in entertainment or sports...politics are just as big kids. Ask Obama!!!

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT : OBAMA FOAM FINGERS

I told you that I had family members who founded this movement so it's only right that I make them the Local Spotlight, especially with all the political climate increases with these debates. So let's give my folks some shine...

So the founders of the Obama Foam Fingers are Ajay Relan & Tenoa Stevenson of Los Angeles. Already engaged in the campaign through registration drives, phone banking and the like, the 2 felt they needed to make their own unique push. It came to them while watching a Laker game and saying how every kid loves foam fingers...then during a commercial break...an Obama commercial dropped. The vision hit them both, they looked at each other and already understood their call. They debuted them at the DNC in Denver and they sold out quickly. They have now concentrated on making them for orgs and thus scored the largest labor union (1.9 million members). They are now pushing to have them sold at Howard University's homecoming and other vendors of the campaign trail...and if Barack claims the presidency they know their will be even more opportunities. How Far Have We Come... | RIP Sean Bell

The verdict has been in, but I have been pondering whether or not I wanted to touch on this seeing the blog is fairly new. But I had to say something. I CAN'T SAY WE ARE DOING SO GREAT AS A COUNTRY WHEN OUR MINORITIES ARE STILL TREATED SO UNFAIRLY IN OUR SOCIETY!!! Everyone talks of all this change that will or can be brought with Obama as president...and the idea of a possible African American president (or even a woman) is an accomplishment in itself...but is America really ready to embrace such a change when we are still dealing with these kind of current events. The verdict itself is a slap in the face for Sean's parents (above), their generation and our own. This verdict made me feel like Nas' title to his forthcoming album.
